Gus Gowland holds a BA in Acting (classical) from The Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama and an MA in Musical Theatre (Writing) from Goldsmiths, University of London. He received his P.h.D in Musical Theatre from the University of Wolverhampton in 2020. His thesis ‘Standing in the Shadows’?: Reframing Homosexuality in Musical Theatre was a practice-led investigation of gay male representation in musicals.

Gus is currently Post Graduate Musical Theatre Coordinator at Leeds Conservatoire and a visiting lecturer at York St. John University. Prior this this, Gus was the first Programme Leader for the BA Musical Theatre at University of Lincoln from 2020 - 2022. Previously, Gus was senior lecturer in the Musical Theatre Department at Leeds Conservatoire, teaching Contextual Studies . Gus was also visiting lecturer at University Centre Shrewsbury, where he taught contextual studies, acting, acting through song and professional practice. Prior to these appointments, Gus was a visiting lecturer at University of Wolverhampton, and has delivered guest lectures at Edge Hill University and University Centre Shrewsbury. Gus is a visiting expert for Fontys Academy of the Arts in the Netherlands.

Gus is co-editor of Contemporary British Musicals: Out of the Darkness for Bloomsbury Methuen, has delivered papers at the Song, Stage and Screen conferences in 2017, 2018 and 2019 and has written book reviews for Studies in Musical Theatre and New Theatre Quarterly.
